What do you get when you mix Sly and the Family Stone with the Beatles and then throw in a generous helping of Black Sabbath? Well King’s X of course. Their groove is undeniable and their mixture of vocal harmony and heavy riffs was completely unique in the 80s. Yet, they found a way of alienating almost everyone—they were too heavy for Pop fans and too light for Metal heads. (Vocal harmony usually doesn’t go down well with the Children of the Corn). I played this tune with Terry Syrek (one of the most gifted musicians I’ve ever met and an inspiration to me) at the National Guitar Workshop. “Dogman” is about 3 minutes and we put a 5 minute ending on it. It was great hearing the audience begin to clap...then stop...then start...then stop over and over again until they finally gave up.
